MT - the Jewish community in Denmark
There has been a Jewish presence in Denmark for over 300 years. Jews have actively participated in Danish cultural life, science and business. MT is short for "mosaisk troesssamfund" and is an officially recognized religious community that has appr. 2,400 members. There is an estimated number of 7,000 jews in Denmark of which most are living in Copenhagen and the immediate surroundings. The Jewish Community in Denmark is the oldest in Scandinavia. Today there are about 7000 Jews in Denmark, most of them living in Copenhagen. The Jewish Community is governed by: A council of 20 delegates elected by members of the community. Social institutions include two homes for the aged and one condominium with 38 self contained apartments, pre-schools, and a Jewish day School from kindergarten through 9th grade located in the suburbs of Copenhagen. During the 18th and 19th centuries, 113 of the Jewish population of 5,000 people resided in the provinces. Remainders of these former provincial communities can still be found in ten Danish towns. The two oldest cemeteries were established approximately 300 years ago in Fredericia and Nakskov. Many international Jewish organisations have branches in Copenhagen. Among these are B'nai Brith, WIZO, The Zionist Federation, Keren Kajemeth, the United Jewish Appeal, Maccabi (Hakoah) and B'nei Akiva .
